Transportation on Christmas Day

Sadly, there is absolutely no public transport available on Christmas Day. That means no buses, trams or tube trains.  However, there are other ways to get around the city that will help to blow away those Christmas Eve cobwebs.

Rent a Boris bike

Cycling through the quiet streets is an option. With little to no traffic, hopping on a bicycle will get you to where you need to be in a matter of minutes. If you don’t own a bike, you can always rent one on the Santander Cycle Scheme. The scheme allows users to rent a bike from £2 a day to promote greener living in the area. 

Tours and Trips

Take a tour of the city on a handy hop-on hop-off bus tour that allows you to explore over 70 of London’s iconic landmarks at your own pace. An entertaining commentary is also provided and you are free to “hop-off” whenever your heart desires. 

Hop aboard a luxury coach to experience the wonderful sights London has to offer. You can choose between a morning tour or a nighttime tour to visit iconic places such as the Tower of London, Trafalgar Square and the Houses of Parliament. 

You could also set sail on the Thames for a panoramic tour of the city on a luxury Christmas cruise. Enjoy a one hour circular cruise on a heated river boat complete with an open upper deck. Go for a Wintry Walk

Hampstead circular walk takes you on a journey through Hampstead Heath which is primarily known for its luscious green spaces. If it’s snowing, you should take the kids to Waterlow Park for some seriously fun sledging. 

London is eerily quiet on Christmas Day, so it is nice to be able to take a walk around in peace as opposed to the usual hustle and bustle of the city.  Black cabs are also available but be warned, they can be pretty expensive. 

Visit a Pub On Christmas Day

Looking for a local boozer to visit with the family on Christmas morning? Having a pint at the pub on Christmas Day is a British tradition, and while they may not be open all day, most pubs are open until midday. Here are some of London’s best pubs to visit on Christmas Day, most of which serve Christmas dinners and are open all day long. 

The Swan in Hyde Park has been standing since 1721 and can be found facing the park itself. Apparently, if you spend over £150, they’ll knock 10% off your bill! It is said that the term ‘one for the road’ was first coined here when the local jailer would ask for one last beer for their prisoner. 

Christmas Day is possibly the best day to come here if you want to avoid the hustle and bustle of Camden. The Spread Eagle craft pub and eating house has been at the centre of the community since 1858 and is a stone’s throw away from beautiful Regent’s Park. Perfect for a wintry walk afterwards. 

Get on down to The Owl and The Pussycat for some festive grub this Christmas. Located in trendy Shoreditch, this rustic yet modern pub will cater to all your needs while you eat, drink and be merry!

The Prince Albert has been around since 1866, serving up top-quality food and drinks. Christmas at The Prince Albert is like no other with classic British Christmas dishes and festive tipples. This dog-friendly, cosy pub can be found on Albert Bridge Road not far from Battersea Park. 

Dine Out

Thankfully, there are a variety of places to eat a traditional Christmas lunch on the big day. Bookings are required, some as early as August. So if you have a place in mind, it is a good idea to check out the booking process sooner rather than later.

Book in at Hans’ Bar and Grill in Chelsea for a home from home dining experience, without the added stress of hosting. Celebrate the day with friends and family over a beautifully decorated table and indulge in the finest Christmas cuisine.  

Over at St John in Farringdon, diners can feast on a succulent hog roast that serves up to 22 people followed by sweet apple and calvados trifle for dessert. The three-course menu offers a choice of beef, fish, game or goose along with vegetarian options so that nobody is left out. 

If Chinese food is your thing, then head on over to Min Jiang in Kensington for traditional Chinese dishes with a Christmas twist. Choose from an array of meals including a whole wood-fired beijing duck..

Cinnamon Club at Westminster serves up a traditional Christmas dinner with an Indian twist. Dessert includes a garam masala Christmas pudding with spiced cinnamon custard. The popular eatery offers a four-course meal with a festive tipple in its Christmas menu.

Christmas Afternoon Tea

Enjoy a festive Afternoon Tea at The Ritz in the luxurious Palm Court. With over 18 varieties of tea served with the usual finger sandwiches and delicious Christmas treats, The Ritz is the place to be to enjoy a fun afternoon with loved ones. Father Christmas might also pay a visit with presents for some very lucky children. 

Also found in Palm Court is The Langham serving classic British cakes and biscuits with a festive twist. Tuck into delicious finger sandwiches and scones with clotted cream and jam before washing it down with a tea of your choice. The Langham caters for young children too, with fun gingerbread biscuits and Christmas cupcakes.

Visit the Waldorf Hilton London for a magical Sugar Plum Fairy Afternoon Tea. Feast on salmon blinis followed by sugar plum jam and scones washed down with a fine cup of British tea. You could even treat yourself to a festive glass of fizz. 

The Savoy hosts a magical Afternoon Tea complete with lavish decorations and a truly stunning Christmas tree. Delve into turkey finger sandwiches and fruity mince pies to get into the festive spirit. 

Attractions Open on Christmas Day

Church Services 

Many churches and cathedrals host a Christmas Day service open to the public. Visit world-famous St Paul’s Cathedral to watch its most famous Christmas concert “A Celebration of Christmas”. Join fellow worshippers at  historic Southwark Cathedral to take a journey to Bethlehem to greet the Christ-child.

The Christmas church services may have limited spaces so check on the website for visiting guidelines as you may need to book a slot. Last year, some churches live-streamed their Christmas events which may also be the case for some this year.   

Go Skating

Pull on your skates for a trip around the ice-rink. Most places are closed on the big day, however JW3 ice rink usually has its doors open to the public if you fancy some afternoon fun. Treat yourself to a hot chocolate or a mulled wine afterwards to get into the Christmas spirit. 

Local Parks 

Most of London’s best parks are open on Christmas Day and are usually quite busy. Take the children out on their new bikes delivered by Santa himself. Alternatively, you can work off that Christmas dinner with a wintry afternoon stroll. If you are in central London, then Hyde Park or Kensington Park may be best suited to you. Explore Victoria Park if you are in East London, frequently voted as one of London’s best parks. 

Swimming

Will you be daring enough to go for a dip in the icy waters? If you plan to take a stroll through Hyde Park, keep your eyes peeled for the Serpentine Swimming Club as they compete for the Peter Pan Cup Race. This bizarre event takes place every Christmas morning as brave members dive head first into the freezing cold Serpentine lake. We’ll take a pass thanks! 

For a warmer (and safer!) swim, book ahead for a spot at Hampton Pool to get a kick-start on that pending January health regime. 

Guided Walks

Dust off your walking boots and get yourself down to Trafalgar Square at 2pm sharp for a Charles Dickens themed walk. The tour explores the Victorian alleyways and hideaways frequented by the man who reinvented Christmas, Charles Dickens himself. Sadly, the tour was suspended last year due to the pandemic, however there are high hopes for its return this year. 

Body Worlds

This fantastic and informative exhibition of real human bodies may not seem very festive – and it isn’t. However, the Body Worlds exhibitions are one of the most successful in the entire world. Join Dr. Angelina Whalley and Dr. Gunther Von Hagens as they educate the audience about the inner workings of the human body through amazing (if not slightly gruesome) real human specimens. Just what you need right before a delicious Christmas dinner!

There is no better way to spend an evening than exploring the Christmas Markets in London. Stroll along seeing the stalls selling all manner of gifts, drinking mulled wine and enjoying one of the delicious treats.

Some of the markets are walking distance from each other so you could even make a night of it and visit several different ones over the course of the evening.

Take advantage of the free entertainment provided by street performers and musicians. You might just find yourself singing carols under the stars.

1.  Southbank Centre Christmas Market

Just a stone’s throw away from Westminster, you will find the Southbank Centre Christmas Market. Here, you can browse the various wooden chalets for festive food and drinks while overlooking the stunning River Thames.

Indulge on succulent barbecued Bratwurst sausages and waffles doused in maple syrup before exploring the riverside with a mulled wine in hand.

Peruse the stalls for last-minute stocking fillers and gifts for your loved ones. Handcrafted wooden toys and jewellery can be bought here. There are even gifts for your pets!

Also known as “Southbank Winter Festival” and “Southbank Winter Market”, Southbank transforms into a winter wonderland over the festive period with incredible illuminations, beautiful carol singing and tons of family entertainment.

In 2019, a pop-up cinema screened family classics such as Beauty and The Beast, Toy Story and Frozen. Other attractions include a funfair where screams of laughter and joy can be heard from rides like the carousel and the adrenaline-boosting Starflyer that lifts you 75 metres into the air.

2. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

Get into the festive spirit by visiting Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park. This fun family event features everything from Christmas markets and festive entertainment to fairground rides and attractions.

The traditional Christmas market consists of dozens of Alpine-style wooden huts serving delicious hot food and drinks. From chocolate-covered crepes and waffles to creamy mugs of hot chocolate and spiced glühwein (mulled wine), you won’t be short on food or drinks – put it that way!

Why not grab a cocktail at Bar Ice, where the tables and chairs are literally made out of ice?

Pre-booking is essential, so don’t leave it too late. The Fire Pit bar creates a warm Christmas atmosphere with its crackling fires and live music. Then there is the unique Carousel Bar taking you on a 360-degree spin while you enjoy a tipple of your choice.

Other attractions include ice skating on the UK’s largest outdoor ice rink, or why not take a trip on the Giant Observation Wheel to take in the magical views of London!

See the eyes of your children light up as they ride the Victorian carousel and the terrifyingly brilliant rollercoaster. You will not regret a moment spent revelling in the magic of Winter Wonderland.

3. Christmas in Leicester Square

Leicester Square is transformed into a festive wonderland during Christmas. The markets run from November until January and are the perfect place to browse for a gift or tuck into festive treats and drinks.

Don’t worry about bored faces as there is plenty for the kids to get involved with. In 2019, Leicester Square saw some seriously fun entertainment which we hope will make a comeback this year.

Pay a visit to Santa’s Grotto for a chat with the man himself, and you may even receive a small gift in return!

Live performances and music can be seen and heard daily around the square creating an air of excitement all around. Impressive circus acts performed by La Clique included fire breathing and sword-swallowing back in 2019.

Hopefully, the show will return this year, that is, if you’re brave enough to watch it!

The main markets are open from midday until 12 pm and at the slightly earlier time of 10 am at the weekend. If you want to browse the markets in peace, arriving at midday is recommended when they are not too busy.

4. Greenwich Christmas Market

Open all year round, Greenwich Market is perfect for a spot of Christmas shopping. The market has around 150 stalls selling all kinds of festive treats, gifts and drinks.

Choose from a selection of quirky stocking fillers, original artworks and home accessories. Sweet treats such as gingerbread cookies and Christmas cupcakes can be purchased as well as hot drinks.

The inside of the hall is draped in glittering decorations and dazzling lights that create an air of warmth and excitement.

Be sure to wander around the beautiful village of Greenwich to take in the scenic, and fairy-lit views of London. Take a wintry walk up to the top of the hill at Greenwich Park, or step over the Greenwich Meridian Line.

5. Winterville in Clapham Common

This alternative festival held at London’s Clapham Common is a mixture of spectacular live music and performances, food tents and craft workshops.

There is also an ice rink, a roller disco and a pop-up cinema.

The first Winterville took place in 2017 and became a huge success, leaving the public wanting more. Well-known celebrities such as former Spice Girl Melanie C and nightclub favourite DJ Yoda and the Cuban Brothers have taken to the stage.

Sadly Winterville won’t be running in 2021 but there are high hopes for its return next year.

6. Somerset House Christmas Arcade

The Christmas Arcade at Somerset House is a fantastic place for a fun day out with the family. Each year, the West Wing is transformed into a mini shopping centre with an array of pop up stalls.

Pick up a festive hamper or a last-minute gift for that special someone. These temporary stalls also sell festive decorations and yummy treats to enjoy whilst taking in the sights.

If shopping isn’t your thing, why not pull on a pair of skates and take to the ice rink to make some (most likely priceless) memories.

7. Kingston Upon Thames Christmas Market

Magnificent displays of light and dazzling decorations blanket the pedestrianised streets of Kingston Upon Thames at Christmas, and you won’t believe your eyes when you see how Ancient Market Place is transformed at this time of the year.

Up to 50 Bavarian-style chalets line the marketplace selling only the finest German delicacies and steaming hot drinks to warm up those freezing fingertips.

Handmade crafts and trinkets can be purchased as well as stocking fillers and home accessories.

Live entertainment from local musicians and street performers can also be enjoyed by all as the air is filled with laughter and joy for a truly magical experience.

8. Christmas By The River

Want to find the best views in London? Look no further than Christmas By The River markets.

Take in the breathtaking views of Tower Bridge and the Tower of London as you peruse the scenic Christmas market by the river.

Year after year, visitors are dazzled by the stunning illuminations and festive decor that cover London Bridge City. Here you will find festive chalets serving up the most delicious festive treats and drinks. Enjoy a spiced mulled cider with friends or indulge in a tasty hog roast bap followed by waffles with maple syrup.

Christmas By The River is well worth a visit if you happen to be passing by!

9. Covent Garden Christmas

The infamous Apple Market is brimming with independent stalls selling tasty festive treats, unique gifts and trinkets. Treat yourself to a hot mulled wine and a gingerbread man as you shop ‘til you drop in this beautiful area of London.

10. Westfield London Winter Village

This one-stop-shop will provide you with all you need for the festive season. Winter Village made its debut in 2019 and was an instant hit with the people. So what is there to do at Winter Village?

Dine, in style, in a cosy Winter Igloo, the newest addition to Westfield Square. Enjoy a meal with friends or family and treat yourself to a festive cocktail or two – go on, you deserve it!

If you are in search of some seriously fun entertainment, then the All Star Lanes karaoke chalets may be right up your street. Installed with a state-of-the-art karaoke system complete with over 80,000 songs, you are bound to have an unforgettable festive night out.

Westfield London is home to around 400 retailers selling everything from Yuletide gifts, home accessories and delicious takeaway food and drinks. You will also find London’s second-largest Christmas tree here, which is a sight to behold with thousands of twinkling lights and stunning decorations.

11. Country Living Fair London

Brought to life from the magazine itself, the Country Living Christmas Fair is an unmissable day out if you prefer a more traditional way of life.

Brought together under one roof, there is so much to see and do here at the Business Design Centre in Islington. From home styling advice to cooking workshops, you will not want to leave.

Choose from a selection of local dairy products and festive treats brought to you by over 450 artisan businesses. Browse the stalls for small gifts and Christmas hampers before stopping for a glass of bubbles at the popular Champagne Bar.

If cooking is your thing, why not check out one of the many food demonstrations presented by celebrity chefs.

Members of the Country Living editorial team will also host talks based on the latest and greatest decorating techniques and how you can live more sustainably.

The fair will run from November 10 – November 14, 2021, so book your tickets now to avoid disappointment.

12. Maltby Street Night Market

Located beneath Bermondsey’s Victorian railway arches, Maltby Night Market is open all year round but is brightened up with a hint of magic at Christmas time.

Festive menus from all over the globe can be purchased from various street food vendors as well as spiced mulled wine and sweet treats.

Carol singers and buskers are the choices of entertainment at Maltby market, and the sound of laughter and chit-chat fills the arches with festive spirit.

While it may not be deemed ‘high-end’ like other London markets, there is something so authentic and rustic about Maltby that it doesn’t need to be. The Dickensian setting unites all who visit, making it a great spot for a bite to eat and a casual browse. 

Also, it’s a must to try some of the Christmas beers on the Bermondsey Beer Mile!

13. Eccleston Yards Market

With over 60 boutique market stalls, the Eccleston Yards Christmas Market is located in Belgravia, one of London’s most affluent districts.

Here you will find some of the most dazzling stocking fillers and festive gifts, as well as undeniably delicious food and the best in hot beverages. Live music and entertainment are also performed by up-and-coming local artists, giving them the publicity they deserve.

The market can be found just a ten minute walk away from Victoria tube station and runs most weekends in December from around 5 pm to 11 pm.

14. Christmas Under The Canopy

The hanging stars light up once again for the return of Christmas Under The Canopy held at King’s Cross.

Get into the Christmas spirit with a festive coffee and browse around this fantastic market. Whether you are shopping for yourself or others, you are sure to find some Christmas inspiration from the sheer amount of stalls at King’s Cross.

Last year, the Crafty Fox joined forces with the market and work from London’s finest artists, and designers could be purchased in a special three-day market.

Festive blooms were also available from local botanists, The Rooms as well as gin gift boxes from Artisan Gin.

We hope Popina will be back this year with their delicious selections of festive mince pies, and Heritage Cheese are bound to lure in customers with their luxury cheese boards.

If you like shopping, eating and drinking (who doesn’t?), then get yourself down to Christmas Under The Canopy for a great day out. Don’t worry about the weather because it’s all indoors!

When Christmas time swings around London gets decorated in beautiful Christmas lights. From the switching on the light ceremony in Oxford Circus to Kew Gardens being decked out with mesmerising displays of light, there is plenty of wonderful displays to visit. 

These are some of the best Christmas lights in London, where to find them and the dates you can visit.

1.  Christmas At Kew

Explore the Royal Botanical Gardens of Kew by stepping into a wonderland of glittering illuminations and mesmerising displays of light. The activities begin after dark, taking visitors on a journey through tunnels of sparkling light where trees can be seen wrapped in jewels of glowing colour.

The Fire Garden boasts a phenomenal display of flickering flames whilst a spectacular finale awaits at The Palm House. Independent street vendors line the route, just in case you fancy a quick bite to eat. Festive treats and tasty beverages can be purchased to warm you up along the way.

The attraction runs from Wednesday, November 17, 2021, until Sunday, January 9, 2022, from 4 pm-10 pm. This event is ticketed, so book in advance to secure your spot.

2.  Oxford Street Christmas Lights

Everybody knows some of the best Christmas lights can be found on Oxford Street. Consisting of 222,000 dazzling LED bulbs, the Oxford Street lights attract over one million tourists each year.

The switching on of the lights draws in the largest crowds and are usually turned on by a well-known celebrity and supported by a local radio station with performances from local musicians.

The history of the Oxford Street lights dates back to 1959 when they were first displayed. However, the idea of Christmas street lights was first tried out on nearby Regent Street in 1954. The purpose behind this attraction was to brighten up post-war London as it was deemed bleak and grey.

The running cost of these lights can be very expensive, and in 1957, the lights were replaced by gas-filled balloons – which struggled to gain interest, as you can imagine. It was thought that the money invested in these lights could be better spent elsewhere, and they didn’t return until the late 1970s.

The Oxford Street lights are 1.5 miles long, starting at Marble Arch and ending at Tottenham Court Road.

3.  Regent Street Lights

Regent Street runs perpendicular to Oxford Street, and the Christmas lights here are equally as impressive. Known for having the largest display of lights, Regent Street pulls out all the stops by changing the pattern of lights annually so that year after year, returning tourists will see a new and unique display.

The Regent Street Christmas Lights run from Oxford Circus to Waterloo Place, which makes for a lovely, wintry stroll along the streets of London to take in the dazzling display of twinkling lights.

The lights are illuminated at around 3:30 pm each day up until midnight, and this can be said for the majority of Christmas light displays around the area.

So throw on your thermals and step outside to see these incredible illuminations. The Regent Street lights are the best Christmas lights, simply because they were the first ones here!

4.  Carnaby Christmas Lights

Known as the swinging (that’s swing dancing!) hotspot of London, the Carnaby Street display of lights reflected the musical revolution of the 60s when first installed. Back in the day, Carnaby Street was the place to be for Mods, New Romantics and Punks. It is still a cool and stylish place to be, and this is mirrored by the creative light installations.

This Soho street is a no vehicle zone, so feel free to snap away and get that perfect selfie!

5.  Covent Garden Christmas Lights

Explore the cobbled streets of Covent Garden, where the stunning displays of light blanket the sky.

The 19th-century Piazza is studded with 115,000 jewelled lights, and don’t forget to check out the 60-feet tall Christmas tree covered with 30,000 glittering lights, met with nothing but admiration from the crowd. This tree is also hand-picked at the same place as the Queen picks hers! The erecting and decorating of the tree take 300 hours and 60 workers, with the help of a cherry picker, of course. We’re tired, just writing about it!

Giant chandeliers of mistletoe line the streets so you can plant a surprise kiss on that special someone. The festive spirit at Covent Garden is truly undeniable and not one to miss.

The mandatory switch-on has been performed by many celebrities over the years, including the likes of Kylie Minogue, Rita Ora and Cheryl Cole. Sadly due to the pandemic, the Christmas switch-on was cancelled in 2020; however, there are high hopes that it will resume this year.

6.  Marylebone Village Lights

The popular board game of Monopoly comes to mind when we think of Marylebone, yet this West End district is one of London’s most acclaimed shopping areas. But what about the Christmas lights?

This chic area of London invests a lot into the festive period, and the Merry Marylebone campaign is one of them. Funded and organised by The Howard de Walden Estate, Merry Marylebone brings the community together with festive displays and performances loved by all.

Scour the shops for designer discounts this Christmas, including popular names such as LuluLemon and Paul Smith. Then step outside into the hustle and bustle underneath the stunning illuminations that light up the afternoon sky. Pay a visit to St Marylebone Parish Church for Christmas carols performed by the local choir before settling into one of the many beautiful restaurants for a well-deserved fine dining experience.

7.  King’s Cross and Coal Drops Yard Christmas Lights

Traditional, yet modern. The decorations around here are questionable but magnificent. Just a short, 5-minute walk from Kings Cross station, and you will arrive at Coal Drops Yard. With its ancient cobbled streets and red brick arches, the buzz here is almost deafening.

Coal Drops Yard brings Christmas to life with its unusual array of decorations and illuminations. In 2020, a terrarium Christmas tree was installed, standing at 28-feet tall. Each terrarium contained its very own mini garden and was surrounded by a variety of mirrored baubles. Interesting, huh? There are plenty of individual shops to purchase that last-minute Christmas gift and don’t forget to check out the gorgeous festive window displays.

Kings Cross is the go-to place for food around here, with many eateries serving up Christmas feasts and treats. Many restaurants are constructed with beautiful terraces if you want to brave the cold and dine al fresco, with outdoor heaters, of course!

Check out the Festive Forest at Granary Square or have fun with the interactive tree at Battle Bridge Place.

8.  South Bank Christmas Lights

Get involved in the festivities this year by attending Southbank to see the incredible illuminations at the Winter Light exhibition. Artworks from fifteen artists are displayed around the riverside area for tourists to admire, lighting up the cold, dark months.

These inspiring pieces of art use sources of light to explore ideas about gender, nature and aesthetics. This free exhibition can be found in all outdoor areas of Southbank, with more artwork added up until mid-December. Check it out!

Take a walk along the Thames with a steaming mug of mulled wine to view the endless fairy-lit trees dancing in the reflection of the water. The Southbank Christmas markets are also worth a browse for delicious german delicacies and last-minute gifts.

9.  St James’s and Piccadilly Christmas Lights

It wasn’t until 2017 that Piccadilly had its first-ever display of Christmas lights, and now they are proudly installed annually for all to see.

The first display of lights was originally inspired by the Greek god Anteros, known as the god of requited love. The statue of Anteros is a well-known landmark in London and was first erected in Piccadilly Circus in 1893. Recently, that particular installation of lights has changed, and they can now be seen all around the area in shop windows, across the streets and adorning historic buildings.

Check out luxury store Fortnum and Mason for their impressive window displays. In 2020, each window was numbered to mimic the look of a traditional advent calendar. Infamously known for being the Queen’s grocer, Fortnum and Mason really do push the boat at Christmas!

Visit St James’s church for ‘Carols in the Courtyard’ performed by the angelic sounding choir. Pre-registration is required, and the use of face coverings is still in place but don’t let the restrictions put you off!

10. Bond Street Christmas Lights

Famous for its luxury shops, the Christmas lights on Bond Street are truly a sight to behold. Giant snowflakes and glistening peacock feathers of light cover the street and can be seen from every angle. While peacocks may not spring to mind when you think of Christmas, there is a reason behind this incredible display consisting of around 250,000 bulbs.

During the late 18th century, groups of young men known as ‘The Bond Street Loungers’ would strut through the town looking extremely dapper in super fashionable attire, rendering them the ‘peacocks’ of their day. Thus, the beautiful Christmas lights are a nod to these fashionable young men.

However, it is the window displays that gain the most attraction, and it’s easy to see why. Many stores host entertainment and festivities over Christmas, inviting guests inside for a glass of bubbles and a mince pie or two. Cartier embraces the season with vibrant red ribbons that cover the shop front. Last year, a giant illuminated panther could be seen perched on top of the building. We wonder what plans Cartier has in mind for 2021.

11. Connected By Light at Canary Wharf

Visit Canary Wharf to witness the ethereal illuminations that light up the winter skies.

Connected by Light is a captivating festival of light bringing a festive atmosphere to Canary Wharf. The exhibit displays over 30 pieces of illuminated art that cover the estate. Past exhibitions included a poetry trail from Elisa Artesero and a geometric feature by Mandylights at nearby Westferry Circus.

Wearing comfortable shoes is highly recommended as it is quite a walk if you want to get through the whole exhibit. However, you can have a pit-stop along the way on one of the many colour changing benches. There is no need to take a map of the route either. Just follow the crowds, and we promise you won’t get lost. There will be plenty of on-site staff to guide you if you start to panic.

The hustle and bustle of Canary Wharf is not for everyone. Therefore, if you want to browse in peace, we recommend coming on a weekday to avoid large crowds.

12. Mayfair and Belgravia Christmas Lights

Last year, the beautiful boroughs of Mayfair and Belgravia drove tourists wild with their jaw-dropping display of festive lights.

The ever-changing rainbow LED lights on Motcomb street are particularly mesmerising, as are the illuminated archways on South Molton Street. The Christmas tree on Connaught street is a sight to behold. Standing tall and beautifully decorated, this tree is erected annually with thousands of twinkling lights to dazzle the passers-by.

Visit Brown Harts Garden for a creamy hot chocolate or a festive mulled wine to warm yourself up. Halkin Arcade is worth strolling past for a look at the magnificent rainbow-coloured tree. Mayfair and Belgravia are special places to be, particularly when it is the most wonderful time of the year.

13. Leicester Square Christmas Lights

The streets of Leicester will once again be illuminated this year with over 16,000 captivating lights. The official switch-on is usually done over at Humberstone Gate. The event is hosted by well-known celebrities and supported by a local radio station.

Head over to Clock Tower to see the gigantic Christmas tree that consists of over 2,000 bulbs and 900 shiny baubles.

New Market Square offers an array of award-winning street food and drinks, which will be needed after all that sightseeing! From midday to around 10:30 pm, visitors can gather around to watch a Christmas film (Elf was shown last year) on the gigantic outdoor screen.

Visit Town Hall Square to see the traditional nativity scene plus music from a brass band and performances from street artists. Highcross Leicester hosts Winter Galactical, which is a futuristic display of shimmering lights coupled with electrifying performances. It’s all happening at Leicester Square this year, so don’t miss out.

14. Seven Dials Christmas Lights

Last year, tourists were greeted with a more natural display of Christmas lights aptly named ‘Festive Woodland’. Rustic wreaths were adorned with colourful baubles and wrapped in thousands of dazzling lights. The famous dial was also draped in a halo of branch lights creating a warm, festive atmosphere.

Seven dials is perfect for roaming around the eclectic boutiques for that last-minute Christmas gift. There are plenty of places to stop by for a spot of lunch with the family, or why not treat yourself to a festive hot drink while exploring the cobbled streets.

15. The Churchill Arms

Last but not least is the epic display at the Churchill Arms pub in Kensington. Well known for its quirky exterior on a normal day, the Churchill Arms has one-upped every display in the UK by placing 97 (yes 97!) Christmas trees along the exterior walls of the building.

Taking a total of almost three weeks to complete, the display was met with complete adoration from both customers and passers-by. The unique attraction consists of 21,500 lights and is a truly remarkable – yet bizarre – sight.

Named after Winston Churchill’s grandparents, the infamous pub has been standing since 1750 and is one of London’s most historic drinking spots.

See the Christmas Tree in Trafalgar Square

Visit Trafalgar Square to take a look at the infamous Christmas tree that is carefully erected annually. This Norwegian tree was a gift from Oslo, Norway as a thank you for British help during the second world war. 

In 1940, King Haakon VII was forced to flee to London after Germany invaded Norway. His speeches were broadcast to Norway through the BBC World Service, and at the same time, British forces trained Norwegian commandos to fight key Nazi installations in occupied Norway. The Christmas tree was first erected in 1947 and has been put up every year since. The rest is history! 

Visit the Wonderful Christmas Lights Displays

Who doesn’t love to kick the festive season off with the turning on of Christmas lights! 

London Christmas lights are often turned on by a local celebrity, the Christmas lights on Oxford Street, Bond Street, Carnaby Street or Covent Garden are by far the best in London (in our opinion). 

Oxford Street lights were first lit in 1959 following the footsteps of nearby Regent Street. They have since been enjoyed yearly apart from 1976 and 1977 when the light display was absent due to the economic recession.

Did you know – In the Victorian era, people lit up their Christmas trees by placing candles on them which often resulted in house fires. 

Aww at the Christmas Window Displays 

Department stores in London will go all out with their Christmas window displays. Window shopping during the holidays is one of the best free things you can do. 

The first on my list of recommendations is Selfridges. Every year they go all out for their Christmas displays and they even have a whole team dedicated to this. The 2020 displays were all about the ultimate symbol of the festive season – the Christmas tree. I love that they have a commitment to sustainability with Project Earth and the displays continue to use more recycled materials. 

Harry Gordon Selfridge created the phrase ‘X shopping days until Christmas’. 

Fortnum and Mason, The Queen’s grocer put on a great display. They believe Christmas festivities start when the Christmas displays are revealed. Eight iconic windows are decorated each year showcasing brilliant craftsmanship using hand sculpting, painting, lighting and bespoke engineering. 

When you pop in don’t forget to pick up one of their luxury hampers (also happens to be a great gift!). 

Harrods never fails to impress us with their displays every year! In 1908, Father Christmas made his first appearance in a store.

Eating Mince Pies Whilst Watching a London Christmas Movie

There is nothing better than eating mince pies whilst watching a classic London Christmas movie like Love Actually, Bridget Jones’ Diary, A Christmas Carol, Last Christmas, About a Boy, or The Holiday, just to name a few. 

Some cinemas to check out are: 

• Backyard Cinema creates a new theme each year for the holiday season.
• Prince Charles Cinema always puts on a fantastic festive line-up! 
• Luna Cinema has some seriously cool venues like Kensington Palace in the Pavilion on the Palace’s Orangery Lawn.

Attend Midnight Mass at Westminster Abbey

This beautiful church has been in London since 960. The church was rebuilt in 1245 into Gothic style and finished in 1517 The church is most likely where you saw Prince William and Kate’s wedding, as well as other Royal weddings and ceremonies. 

Westminster Abbey celebrates the birth of Christ, the Light of the World, during a late-night service on Christmas Eve. There is singing of Christmas Carols, music from the Abbey Choir, and a sermon lasting about an hour and a half.

Catch a Show at Royal Albert Hall

The Royal Albert Hall has a great list of Christmas shows, there’s always something for everyone. From The Muppet Christmas Carol’ In Concert, The Nutcracker to Christmas With The Royal Choral Society and many other great shows. 

Tickets to shows go on sale around August and make sure you book ahead to get the best prices and seats. 

Explore The Hogwarts In The Snow

All aboard the Hogwarts Express! Grab your wands as it’s time to visit the Great Hall with its festive makeover and sip butterbeer. The whole studio is covered in a blanket of snow from the Hogwarts castle model and shop fronts of Diagon Alley. 

Booking tickets in advance is a must so get in early to avoid any disappointment. 

Ice Skating at One of Iconic Locations

Natural History Museum and Somerset House bring out the true spirit of Christmas with their ice skating rinks. With the stunning buildings as the backdrops, it does make for a magical experience and photo opp! 

Whether you want to try out your ice skating skills or people-watch whilst sipping a mulled wine, it’s a must-do. 

London Pantomime

Did we say pantomime? Oh no we didn’t. Oh, yes we did! (Did you see what we did there?) 

The festive season simply isn’t complete without seeing a good old pantomime. 

These light-hearted performances are perfect for a family day out and you will often see some famous faces with starring roles. A pantomime, commonly referred to as ‘panto’, is a musical comedy stage production that takes well-known fairy tales and puts a spin on them using slapstick comedy, singing and dancing. 

They are enjoyed by families, particularly at Christmas time, and often include the audience in the jokes.

The Christmas markets are found dotted all over the country – but nothing beats the London Christmas markets! Enjoy a bratwurst sausage in a bun followed by a creamy hot chocolate whilst enjoying the hustle and bustle of the crowd.

The markets are a place to enjoy delicious street food and purchase beautifully hand-crafted gifts for loved ones.

The most popular markets can be found in Leicester Square, Greenwich, Southbank Centre and Kingston. 

Winter Wonderland

Held annually at Hyde Park, Winter Wonderland is a truly magical event packed with jolly Christmas markets, exciting rides and fun attractions. Enjoy the spirit of Christmas with a spot of ice skating before entering the mythical ice kingdom made with 500 tonnes of sculptured ice! 

Get Your Christmas Clothing Out! 

Every year we pull out our Christmas jumpers (sweaters) and proudly wear them around London (at least I do). Whether it’s your friends roping you into a pub crawl, Christmas party or you just love Christmas there is always an excuse to wear one. Don’t forget about the socks, ties and any other clothing you can think of! 

Get in early as all the good ones always sell out! Alternatively, buy a unique jumper at a thrift store or on Esty. 

Christmas Afternoon Tea in London

England is famous for its afternoon teas and what better way to enjoy the classic British tradition than with a Christmas theme. Restaurants and teas shops create beautiful spreads of foods with festive cakes, cookies, seasonal sandwiches and you can’t forget a scone with jam and clotted cream. 

Seeing as you are celebrating add some champagne too!

Go a Dip at Serpentine in Hyde Park

The Serpentine Swimming Club have a Christmas tradition where they jump into the freezing cold water in Hyde Park to take part in the Peter Pan Cup. 

Children’s writer J. M. Barrie used to present the winner of the 100-yard swimming race a cup. Because of Mr Barrie, the race was titled the Peter Pan Cup. 

Whilst you may not want to jump into the freezing cold water it is the perfect thing to watch on Christmas day. 

Decorate Your Christmas Tree with London Ornimates 

The world can thank Prince Albert, the beloved husband of Queen Victoria, for popularizing the tradition of Christmas without a tree.

In 1848, a magazine published a drawing of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, and their children celebrating around a decorated Christmas tree.
